For newcomers to the enchanting world of snorkelling, here is a short introduction. Firstly, what equipment do you need? In theory, a mask and a snorkel tube are all that you need. Choosing a mask carefully is important, to ensure that it fits snugly and comfortably, and will not let in water. I find that holding the mask in place, closing the mouth and sucking in through the nose tests for a seal; release your hold on the mask and it should stay in place. Remember to grasp it again before breathing normally! Before entering the sea the mask should be cleaned by rubbing saliva or spraying anti-misting fluid on the inside of the glass and washing off - this helps prevent condensation. A new mask may take a little time and patience to keep clear; the temperature difference between a hot beach and the water can cause moisture from the breath to form on the glass. Persevere! The snorkel tube usually attaches to the mask strap to keep it upright when the snorkeller is floating on the front. Breathing is thus possible in that position, and a breath should be taken and held while submerged. The remaining air should be expelled through the mouth when the tube is again clear of the sea, to remove any water that has gathered inside, before resuming breathing. Swim fins are a very useful accessory, multiplying the motive effect of the legs significantly. Again try them on carefully before purchase to avoid blisters in use. A fin covering the whole foot will provide some protection. Remember too that it is very easy to sunburn while snorkelling. Please select a snorkelling page
